LA’s BEST Day is a time to celebrate the partnerships that make this work possible across Los Angeles. It is also a moment to reflect on the lasting impact of the program through the people who have experienced it firsthand.
For Julian Alamares, that impact came full circle.
Julian was a student in LA’s BEST at Cahuenga Elementary from third through fifth grade. When he looks back, it is the everyday moments that stay with him.
“Back then we would practice softball in the yard, and my friends and I would play until we were invited to a tournament. We competed together, and it was so much fun. I think we placed third.”
He also remembers the people who shaped his experience.
“I remember Mr. Herbert. He was our sports coach. He was always encouraging us and making sure we played to our full potential.”
Years later, Julian heard about LA’s BEST Read Across America through his mother, who is part of the Hankey Group. When he learned the event supported LA’s BEST students, he wanted to come back.
“I’m back here today with these kids. It is so much fun to see their joy. It takes me back to when I was a kid there.”
This time, Julian returned as a volunteer. During the event, he read to students and spent time with them, reconnecting with the kind of experience that once shaped him.
“It’s been a while, but I have so many fun memories of that time.”
For current students, Julian shared a simple message.
“Never stop learning. Always find joy in the little things. Enjoy your time right now. It is so much simpler when you are a child. Enjoy the arts and crafts, enjoy the people who are mentoring you, and just have fun.”
His story reflects what LA’s BEST Day represents. The impact of expanded learning does not end when a student leaves the program. It stays with them, shaping who they become and how they choose to give back.
Julian’s return is a reminder that this work is not just about programs. It is about people, community, and lasting connections that continue well beyond the school day.
